Fitting wald and ex-Wald distributions to response time data: an example using functions for the S-PLUS package.

چکیده
Schwarz (2001, 2002) proposed the ex-Wald distribution, obtained from the convolution of Wald and exponential random variables, as a model of simple and go/no-go response time. This article provides functions for the S-PLUS package that produce maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters for the ex-Wald, as well as for the shifted Wald and ex-Gaussian, distributions. In a Monte Carlo study, the efficiency and bias of parameter estimates were examined. Results indicated that samples of at least 400 are necessary to obtain adequate estimates of the ex-Wald and that, for some parameter ranges, much larger samples may be required. For shifted Wald estimation, smaller samples of around 100 were adequate, at least when fits identified by the software as having ill-conditioned maximums were excluded. The use of all functions is illustrated using data from Schwarz (2001). The S-PLUS functions and Schwarz's data may be downloaded from the Psychonomic Society's Web archive, www. psychonomic.org/archive/.

An evaluation of the Vincentizing method of forming group-level response time distributions.
Vincentizing (quantile averaging) is a popular means of pooling response time distributions across individuals to produce a group average. The benefit of Vincentizing is that the resulting histogram "looks like" an average of the individuals. In this article, we competitively test Vincentizing against the more mundane approach of averaging parameter estimates from fits to individuals. We simula...
متن کاملFitting distributions using maximum likelihood: methods and packages.
The most powerful tests of response time (RT) models often involve the whole shape of the RT distribution, thus avoiding mimicking that can occur at the level of RT means and variances. Nonparametric distribution estimation is, in principle, the most appropriate approach, but such estimators are sometimes difficult to obtain. On the other hand, distribution fitting, given an algebraic function,...
متن کاملA Reexamination of Lord’s Wald Test for Differential Item Functioning Using Item Response Theory and Modern Error Estimation
The detection of differential item functioning (DIF) is an essential step in increasing the validity of a test for all groups. The item response theory (IRT) model comparison approach has been shown to be the most flexible and powerful method for DIF detection; however, it is computationally-intensive, requiring many model-refittings. The Wald test, originally employed by Lord for DIF detection...

Background and Objectives: In studies in which each person may experience an event at different times, they are recurrent events. One of the most popular approaches in analyzing recurrent event is obtaining an estimate of the means/rate of events at different times. In this context, one of the things that could help to better understand the effect of this factor on the response is determining the...
متن کاملWhat are the shapes of response time distributions in visual search?
Many visual search experiments measure response time (RT) as their primary dependent variable. Analyses typically focus on mean (or median) RT. However, given enough data, the RT distribution can be a rich source of information. For this paper, we collected about 500 trials per cell per observer for both target-present and target-absent displays in each of three classic search tasks: feature se...
